Windows RDP VPS

Windows VPS Hungary: RDP Servers Hosted in Budapest

A Windows VPS from VPS Hungary gives you a private Windows Server desktop that you reach over Remote Desktop from anywhere, while the machine itself runs in a Tier III certified datacenter in Budapest. Each virtual machine runs on KVM virtualization with NVMe SSD storage in RAID-10, ECC memory and an unmetered 1 Gbps shared port, so it behaves like a small dedicated computer.

Windows Server 2016 or 2019 is available on every plan from VPH2 upward and is installed as an evaluation edition, usually valid for around 180 days, which you can activate with your own licence key at any time. You receive full Administrator rights, a genuine Hungarian IPv4 address and monthly billing with no long contract. It suits trading terminals, .NET and IIS applications, SQL Server databases, remote office work, automation bots and private proxy or VPN endpoints. Below we cover sizing, licensing, RDP security and upgrades.

Remote Desktop Access with Full Administrator Rights

Once your order is provisioned, usually within one to six hours, you receive the server IP address, the Administrator username and a password in your client area. From that point you connect with any Remote Desktop client: the built-in Remote Desktop Connection app on Windows, Microsoft Remote Desktop on macOS, iOS and Android, or Remmina and FreeRDP on Linux. The session opens a full Windows Server desktop, with Server Manager, PowerShell and the usual administrative tools.

What Administrator rights let you do

Because the instance is a complete KVM virtual machine and not a shared terminal server, nothing is locked down on our side. You can:

  • install any legal software, from trading platforms to development tools and browsers;
  • add Windows roles and features such as IIS, DNS, Hyper-V tooling or Remote Access;
  • create additional local users and decide which of them may log in over RDP;
  • change the RDP port, edit Windows Firewall rules and adjust Group Policy;
  • schedule tasks, run services around the clock and reboot whenever you need to.

Your own private Windows machine

Your VM has dedicated vCPU allocations, its own ECC RAM and its own NVMe disk space. Other customers cannot see your files or processes, and your desktop session keeps running after you disconnect, so a script or a terminal left open will still be working when you reconnect from another device.

Help when the desktop is unreachable

If a firewall change or failed update locks you out, open a ticket at the support desk. Hard reboots and reinstalls requested by ticket are handled on priority, 24/7. Keep in mind that the service is unmanaged by default: we look after the hardware, the network and the hypervisor, while configuration inside Windows is your responsibility. If you would rather hand that work over, paid management is available as an add-on, along with paid backups.

You also get a genuine Hungarian IPv4 address, which matters for services that check location, and extra IPs can be added later if you need several addresses on the same Windows host, for example to isolate separate websites.

Picking the Right Plan for Your Windows Workload

Windows Server needs more memory than a minimal Linux install. The operating system alone, with its services and the desktop shell, comfortably uses one to two gigabytes before you start any application. That is why Windows is offered from VPH2 upward, and why our smallest plan, VPH1, is Linux only. Treat 4 GB of RAM as the realistic starting point.

Matching plans to typical tasks

  • VPH2 – 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe, $33/month. A single trading terminal or two, a light remote desktop for one user, a small IIS site, or a lightweight automation bot.
  • VPH3 – 4 vCPU, 6 GB RAM, 60 GB NVMe, $49/month. Several MT4 or MT5 terminals side by side, a browser-based workflow with many tabs, or a .NET application with a small SQL Server Express database.
  • VPH4 – 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 80 GB NVMe, $85/month. A business application server with IIS and SQL Server, or a shared remote workspace for a small team (each additional user needs suitable Remote Desktop licensing).
  • VPH5 and VPH6 – 6 to 8 vCPU, 10 to 12 GB RAM. Heavier databases, build agents compiling Visual Studio solutions, or many concurrent bots.
  • VPH7 and VPH8 – 10 to 16 vCPU, 14 to 16 GB RAM, up to 200 GB NVMe. Demanding multi-service deployments where CPU and memory headroom both matter.

Disk space on Windows

A fresh Windows Server 2019 install, with page file and updates, typically occupies 20 GB or more, and it grows as cumulative updates accumulate. If you plan to store databases, logs or installers, size the disk generously: VPH3 or VPH4 leaves more breathing room than VPH2. All plans include unmetered traffic on a 1 Gbps shared port, so bandwidth is rarely the deciding factor; memory and storage usually are.

When in doubt, start smaller

Billing is monthly with no long contract, so a practical approach is to begin with the plan that fits today and watch Resource Monitor. If memory stays above 80 percent or the CPU is constantly busy, it is time to move to a higher tier, as described further down this page. For questions about a specific workload, our contact page explains how to reach the team before you order.

How Windows Server Licensing Works on Our VPS

When you choose Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019 on a VPS Hungary plan, we install an unlicensed evaluation edition.

Here is licensing in plain terms. When you choose Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019 on a VPS Hungary plan, we install an unlicensed evaluation edition. It is Microsoft’s standard trial build and typically runs for around 180 days. We do not include or resell a Windows licence in the plan price, and none is provided free of charge.

What the evaluation period means

During the trial window the server is fully functional: Remote Desktop, IIS, PowerShell and the other roles work normally. A countdown is visible on the desktop and in the system settings. As the evaluation nears its end, Windows starts reminding you to activate, and once it expires the operating system begins shutting down periodically, which is clearly unsuitable for production. Plan your activation well before that point.

Activating your own licence

To keep using the server long term, you activate it with a valid Windows Server licence that you obtain yourself, for example through a Microsoft licensing programme or an authorised reseller. Evaluation editions generally have to be converted to a retail or volume edition first, which is done with the DISM command line tool using your product key; Microsoft documents the exact steps for each version. After conversion, enter the key and activate as usual.

Remote Desktop user licensing

Windows Server allows two simultaneous administrative RDP sessions without extra licences. If you plan to give many staff members their own desktops on the same server, Microsoft requires Remote Desktop Services client access licences, which are also your responsibility to buy and install.

Why we do it this way

  • You pay only for the virtual machine, keeping the monthly price transparent.
  • Organisations that already hold licences do not pay twice.
  • You can test your software on Windows for months before deciding on a licence.

If you only need Windows for a short project, the evaluation period may cover it completely. For everything else, budget for a licence from the start. Our terms of service describe your obligations regarding software you install, and the main VPS page covers the general platform in more detail.

What Customers Run on a Budapest RDP Server

A handful of workloads come up again and again. Because the node sits in Budapest with multi-homed connectivity, it is especially well placed for users and services across Central and Eastern Europe.

Forex and trading platforms

MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 are Windows applications, and expert advisors need a terminal that stays online all day. Running them on a VPS removes the dependence on a home PC, a laptop going to sleep or a domestic internet line. If your broker’s servers are in Europe, a Budapest instance can keep order latency low. VPH2 handles one or two terminals; add memory as you add accounts.

.NET, IIS and SQL Server applications

Classic ASP.NET and ASP.NET Core sites, internal line-of-business tools and Windows services all deploy naturally on IIS. Microsoft SQL Server Express runs well on VPH3 and above, while larger SQL Server editions benefit from the extra RAM of VPH4 or higher. Developers can install Visual Studio Build Tools and use the server as a CI agent.

Remote desktop and remote office

Some customers simply want a reliable Windows computer in a datacenter: a place to run accounting software, keep a browser session open, or work securely while travelling. Your session persists after you disconnect, so you resume exactly where you left off.

Bots and automation

Scheduled scripts, scraping tools that respect site terms, social media schedulers, game utilities and RPA software run continuously under Task Scheduler or as services. NVMe storage keeps log-heavy tools responsive.

Proxy and VPN endpoints

With a genuine Hungarian IPv4, the server can act as a private proxy or VPN gateway. Windows Server includes Routing and Remote Access for VPN, and third-party proxy software is easy to install. Extra IP addresses are available as a paid add-on if you need several exit points.

What is not allowed

Any legal use is welcome and common ports are open, but abuse is not tolerated. Spam, attacks on other networks and illegal content lead to account termination. Read the terms before deploying anything that sends bulk traffic or email.

Hardening Remote Desktop on a Public Windows Server

Any server with port 3389 open to the internet will see automated login attempts within hours. Our network includes an internal firewall plus basic DDoS and intrusion protection, but the Windows instance itself is unmanaged, so locking down Remote Desktop is a job for you as the administrator. These steps cover the essentials.

  1. 1

    Use a long, unique password

Replace the initial password on your first login. Choose a passphrase of at least 16 characters that is not used anywhere else, and store it in a password manager. Consider creating a separate administrative account with a non-obvious name and disabling RDP for the built-in Administrator.

  2. 2

    Change the default RDP port

Moving Remote Desktop away from 3389 does not make the server invisible, but it cuts the volume of opportunistic scans dramatically. Edit the PortNumber value under the RDP-Tcp registry key, add an inbound Windows Firewall rule for the new port before restarting the service, then reconnect with ip:port. Always open the new port first, or you will lock yourself out.

  3. 3

    Restrict access with Windows Firewall

    • If you connect from fixed IP addresses, limit the RDP rule to those addresses only.
    • Close any port you are not actively using.
    • Keep Network Level Authentication enabled so credentials are checked before a session starts.
  4. 4

    Enforce account lockout

In Local Security Policy, set an account lockout threshold, for example five failed attempts, with a lockout duration of several minutes. This slows brute-force attempts to a crawl.

  5. 5

    Install updates promptly

Run Windows Update after deployment and keep it scheduled. Remote Desktop vulnerabilities do surface, and patched systems are far harder to compromise. Reboot during quiet hours so trading terminals or services are not interrupted at a critical moment.

  6. 6

    Keep your own backups

Export important data and configuration regularly to storage outside the VPS, or order our paid backup add-on. A good backup turns a security incident into an inconvenience rather than a disaster.

If you do get locked out after a mistaken firewall rule, a support ticket gets the instance rebooted or reinstalled on priority.

Windows Performance on KVM Virtualization and NVMe Storage

How a Windows VPS feels day to day depends on the virtualization layer, the disks and the network behind it. Each of these was chosen to make Windows Server responsive rather than sluggish.

Stacked layers: KVM, NVMe RAID-10, ECC RAM, Network, TuningTuningNetworkECC RAMNVMe RAID-10KVM

Full KVM virtualization

KVM presents your instance with its own virtual hardware and its own kernel, which is exactly what Windows requires. Unlike container-based virtualization, nothing about the operating system is shared with neighbours, and your resources are allocated to your virtual machine. Windows sees a normal machine, so drivers, services and system tools behave as they would on physical hardware.

NVMe SSD in RAID-10

Windows is surprisingly disk-hungry: updates, the page file, search indexing, antivirus scans and database writes all hit storage constantly. NVMe drives deliver far higher input/output rates and lower latency than SATA SSDs or spinning disks, so boots are quick, updates install faster and applications open without long pauses. The RAID-10 layout mirrors and stripes data across drives, adding redundancy against a single drive failure while keeping read and write speeds high.

ECC memory

Error-correcting RAM detects and fixes single-bit memory errors on the fly. For long-running Windows services, databases and trading terminals that may stay up for weeks, that extra protection reduces the risk of silent data corruption and unexpected crashes.

Network built for remote sessions

Remote Desktop is sensitive to latency and jitter. The Budapest facility is connected to multiple ISP carriers, and the 1 Gbps shared port is lightly loaded, so screen updates arrive smoothly and file transfers move quickly. Traffic is unmetered, which means large downloads, software updates and data synchronisation do not generate surprise charges.

Getting the most from your instance

  • Disable visual effects you do not need and choose a lower colour depth in your RDP client.
  • Remove startup programs and services that are irrelevant to your workload.
  • Schedule heavy tasks such as full antivirus scans and large updates outside working hours.
  • Watch Resource Monitor; if memory is consistently tight, an upgrade will help more than any tweak.

To learn more about the physical environment, see our Budapest datacenter page.

Moving Your Windows Server to a Larger Plan

Workloads grow. A single trading terminal turns into five, a test site becomes a production application, or one remote user becomes a small team. When your current instance runs short of memory, CPU or disk, the next step is a higher plan, and the process is straightforward.

Steps: Order, Copy, Test, Cancel1Order2Copy3Test4Cancel

How an upgrade works

VPS plans are resized by moving to a new virtual machine rather than changing the existing one in place. The usual sequence is:

  • Order the larger plan, for example VPH3 or VPH4, from the client area and choose Windows Server 2016 or 2019.
  • Wait for provisioning, which normally takes one to six hours, and log in to the new server over RDP.
  • Back up your data and settings on the old server and copy them across. You run this step yourself, or you can order paid management to have it handled for you.
  • Test the new server thoroughly, then point DNS records, broker connections or client software to the new IP address.
  • Cancel the old plan before its renewal date so you are not billed for another month.

Practical migration tips

  • Export IIS site configurations with the IIS Shared Configuration or Web Deploy tools.
  • Back up SQL Server databases with a full backup file and restore them on the new instance.
  • For MT4 and MT5, copy the terminal data folder, which holds expert advisors, indicators and settings.
  • Lower DNS TTL values a day before the switch so the change propagates quickly.
  • Remember that your Windows licence activation may need to be repeated on the new machine, depending on the licence type you hold.

Planning for the next step

Because billing is monthly with no long-term contract, there is no penalty for moving up when the time is right. If your requirements eventually exceed VPH8, a bare metal server may be the better fit: our dedicated servers in Hungary also support Windows and allow RAM, storage and traffic to be added to most configurations. Payment is accepted by PayPal, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and new orders are processed in the order they arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Windows licence included with the VPS?

No. Windows Server 2016 or 2019 is installed as an unlicensed evaluation edition, usually valid for around 180 days. The plan price covers the virtual machine only. To use Windows beyond the trial, you activate the server with your own licence, which you buy from Microsoft or an authorised reseller and apply yourself.

Which is the cheapest plan that supports Windows?

VPH2 at $33 per month is the entry point for Windows, with 2 vCPU, 4 GB ECC RAM and 50 GB NVMe storage. The smallest plan, VPH1, is Linux only because 2 GB of memory is not enough to run Windows Server comfortably alongside real applications such as trading terminals, IIS sites or databases.

How do I connect to my Windows VPS?

Use any Remote Desktop client with the IP address, username and password shown in your client area. Windows has Remote Desktop Connection built in, and Microsoft offers free clients for macOS, iOS and Android. On Linux, Remmina or FreeRDP work well. If you change the RDP port, add it after the IP address.

Can I run MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5 on it?

Yes. MT4 and MT5 are among the most common workloads on our Windows plans. The terminal and its expert advisors keep running when you disconnect from the session. VPH2 suits one or two terminals, while several terminals with indicators running at the same time are more comfortable on VPH3 or a higher plan.

What happens when the evaluation period ends?

Once the trial expires, Windows starts shutting down periodically and shows activation warnings, so the server is no longer suitable for production work. To avoid this, convert the evaluation edition and activate it with your own licence key before the deadline. The remaining days are visible in the Windows system settings throughout the trial.

Is the Windows VPS managed?

The service is unmanaged by default. We maintain the hardware, network and virtualization layer and handle hard reboots or reinstalls requested by ticket on priority. Configuration, updates and software inside Windows are your responsibility. Paid management and paid backups are available as add-ons if you would prefer us to take on more of that work.

How quickly is a Windows VPS delivered?

VPS orders are typically provisioned within one to six hours, processed in the order they arrive. Once the server is ready, your login details appear in the client area and you can connect over Remote Desktop straight away. Windows deployment can take slightly longer than Linux because the image is larger.

Can I use the server as a VPN or proxy?

Yes, any legal use is permitted. Windows Server includes Routing and Remote Access for VPN, and you can install third-party VPN or proxy software. Each server has a genuine Hungarian IPv4 address, and extra IPs can be ordered as a paid add-on. Using the server for spam, attacks or other abuse leads to termination.

Can I upgrade to a bigger plan later?

Yes. Order the higher plan, migrate your data and settings with your own backup, test the new server, then cancel the old one before it renews. Billing is monthly, so there is no long contract holding you back. Paid management can assist with the move if you would rather not handle it yourself.

Which payment methods do you accept?

You can pay with PayPal or with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies through the client area. Plans are billed monthly with no hidden charges and no long-term commitment. Traffic is unmetered on every plan, so your invoice stays the same regardless of how much data the Windows server transfers in a month.
